THE BATTLE OF THE TOOTHBRUSHES: Electric vs. Manual … Which is Better?

THE BATTLE OF THE TOOTHBRUSHES: Electric vs. Manual … Which is Better?

For generations, we have all brushed our teeth using the standard manual toothbrushes that are available at the dentist’s office or local drug stores. Manual toothbrushes help us to accomplish the daily task of keeping our teeth clean. In comparison, the vibrations of an electric toothbrush thoroughly removes plaque and stains with less effort.  So which is really better?

Actually, this is a trick question. The real answer lies not with the toothbrush you have, but with the method you use to brush your teeth. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing at least twice daily for 2 minutes with fluoridated toothpaste, flossing daily, and replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months.

Still many electric toothbrush users would argue that an electric toothbrush does leave your teeth feeling smoother and cleaner. An electric toothbrush is appropriate for everyone, but there are a few reasons why you may definitely want to consider one for you or a family member:

1) If you have braces or other orthodontic appliance, removing the plaque/debris between the appliances  make it more difficult to keep your teeth clean. This can often result in gingivitis and cavities. Multiple research studies have found that the use of an electric toothbrush results in better gum health and plaque removal in patients who are in active orthodontic treatment (braces, etc).

2) If you suffer from arthritis, partial paralysis/injury, or other condition that impairs your ability to take care of your teeth, then an electric toothbrush may make brushing your teeth easier for you.

3) If you have a young child or a child with special needs, an electric toothbrush presents a quick way to brush their teeth. Choosing a toothbrush with your child’s favorite color or cartoon character can make this tool more fun to use!
