When you find out that you need dental work done, it’s important to understand exactly what’s happening and why you are being recommended a particular treatment. If it has recently been suggested that you get crowns or bridges, you might be wondering a few things. What are crowns and bridges, anyway? Why do you need them? How can they help?

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap that is placed on top of a damaged tooth and is made out of a porcelain-like substance.

How will a crown help me?

Getting a crown can help you keep a damaged tooth instead of needing to have it pulled. Some teeth are so badly damaged that they’re beyond help, but if a tooth looks like it can be saved, getting a crown can help keep you from needing dentures or a completely manufactured tooth.

Why do I need one?

If you have any of these, you might need a crown:
  • a broken tooth
  • a tooth with a large cavity
  • a loose dental bridge
  • a missing tooth
  • weak teeth

Won’t it stick out?

A crown is made using a color that matches the teeth beside to the tooth receiving the crown. The color is selected with your help to ensure the color matches  your esthetic goals

What is a bridge?

A dental bridge is an appliance that is put into a gap where a tooth originally was. Bridges can be made out of porcelain, just like crowns can.

How can a bridge help me?

A bridge can help you have a complete smile. By replacing lost teeth, bridges can also help you have an easier time eating tough foods. If losing teeth has caused your speech abilities to decline, bridges can also help improve your speech.
Additionally, when some teeth are missing, it becomes easier for other teeth to move around in your mouth, so getting a bridge could help your remaining teeth stay in the correct position, too. Unlike dentures, bridges are permanent fixtures.

Why would I need one?

If you have gaps in your mouth because you’ve lost one or more teeth, bridges are recommended to keep your other teeth healthy and to help you with other aspects of your life that may have become more difficult because of tooth loss.

Won’t it be noticeable?

At Leary Family Dentistry, we strive to provide dental solutions that are NOT noticeable, rather that create a beautiful, natural-looking smile. Our bridges are no different in that yours will be custom designed to look as much like your natural tooth as possible.
Crowns and bridges are fairly common dental appliances that are very useful for people with missing or damaged teeth.
